Mental Health is one of the most misunderstood parts of the medical field. Statistics show that at least one out of every five people in the world will suffer from a mental health condition, disease, or ailment.
This not only affects the individual, but it affects those around them as well. The truth is that many people still live with the stigma that surrounds mental health and even the word depression causes most people to tell the individual to just “snap out of it” or “be grateful for what you do have.” We as nurses have the opportunity to help those who suffer from these conditions to understand they are not alone and they are more normal than they believe.

Spend some time with patients who are suffering from these conditions and you will realize that what they need most are empathy and understanding and a from there a diagnosis and treatment can begin.
