Violence Against Nurses in The Workplace

Violence against nurses has become an increasingly problematic issue that to this point has been ignored.

However, according to a US Labor and Statistics report issued in late 2016 almost 75% of all workplace assaults occur within the healthcare industry, with nurses bearing much of the abuse.

Unfortunately, being nurses requires that we help patients who are in physical or emotional struggle and their only outlet to discharge their anxiety may be the nurse standing in front of them. This is the same nurse who is trying to eliminate symptoms and cure the underlying cause.

Violence against nurses is now starting to become noticed and courses are now being offered to help those in our field deal with the real issue of the violence we face in our own workplace. For instance, places like Nurse.com are offering online courses like their Web307 course entitled “ Nurse, Take Care of Thy Self.” It is ever more evident that this is a very real problem and through continuing education programs and nurses speaking out about these events hopefully, we can begin to create a dramatic decrease in the occurrence of these events.
